ATLANTA DOWNS TIMBERS ON PKs PORTLAND (9-23-2007)-- It was a heartbreaker at the end. After dominating a match and the Timbers hitting the crossbar and posts on several shots the Atlanta Silverbacks downed Portland 3-1 on penalty kicks after a scoreless 90 minutes followed by a scoreless 30 minute mini-match. Sadly the team couldn't get the ball in the net enough during the penalty kick phase as well.
A crowd of 11,879 witnessed the match in which the Timbers outshot the Silverbacks 22-10. Josh Wicks made 3 saves in the extra time, but only Leonard Griffin would make a PK for the team at the end.
Clearly the Timbers had their most successful season since returning in 2001! It was announced in October the the club will host MLS side Toronto FC on October 28th for the first post season exhibition in modern franchise history (as well as the NASL history).
Gavin Wilkinson was named USL D-1 Coach of the Year, Josh Wicks was named Goalkeeper of the Year as well as the GAA title, Cameron Knowles and Andrew Gregor joined Wicks for 1st Team USL D-1 Honors. Scot Thompson was named to the D-1 Second Team.
